Collaboration for a Greener Future: Egypt and Europe Join Forces to Upgrade Water Treatment Plant in Cairo

The Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation recently signed a financing agreement worth 61.5 million euros with the French Development Agency and the European Union to complete the Yellow Mountain water treatment plant project in Cairo. This project is focused on enhancing climate change adaptation efforts and water projects in Egypt, which make up a significant portion of the development cooperation portfolio with the European Union.

The agreement includes a development financing agreement worth 50 million euros, a grant worth 1.5 million euros, and a grant agreement worth 10 million euros between the European Union and the French Development Agency. These funds will go towards the implementation of the third phase of the Al-Jabal Al-Asfar water treatment plant project, which serves 17.5 million people by collecting and treating wastewater. The project aims to increase the station’s capacity by one million cubic meters per day using advanced technology and tertiary treatment for treated water provision for agricultural irrigation and biogas generation.

The signing of this financing agreement coincides with World Water Day and is part of the joint Egyptian-European relations under the “Team Europe” initiative. The Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, highlighted the importance of the water sector in Egypt’s development and the impact it has on achieving comprehensive development. She emphasized that cooperation in water security and management is crucial for sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts.
