The month of April is National Minority Health Month, a time to bring attention to the health disparities that exist among racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. The goal of this annual observance is to motivate everyone to take action and put an end to these inequalities, so that all individuals can enjoy better health outcomes.

This year’s theme, “Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections,” highlights the significance of understanding how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN populations impact their overall health. These factors, collectively referred to as social determinants of health (SDOH), play a crucial role in shaping individuals’ wellness.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is committed to working with public health and community-based organizations to “Be the Source for Better Health.” Their mission is to provide quality, equitable, and respectful care that takes into account diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages , economic circumstances , environmental conditions ,and health literacy levels . By offering culturally appropriate information in healthcare settings ,healthcare providers can empower patients to make informed decisions about their health. This can lead to improved outcomes for not only patients but also their families and communities .

By collaborating towards addressing health disparities and promoting equity in healthcare we are taking steps towards creating a more inclusive society where all people have access
