Thyroid cancer is a type of malignant tumor that forms in the thyroid gland and is more common in women than men. The disease is one of the top 10 most common types of cancer in Vietnam, with approximately 6,120 new cases and over 850 deaths in 2022, according to Globocan.

Doctor Tran Huu Thanh Tung from Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City explained that thyroid cancer often develops without any early symptoms but has a good prognosis and high cure rate if detected early. Individuals who have been exposed to radiation, have a family history of thyroid cancer, genetic syndromes, iodine deficiency, or obesity should proactively screen for thyroid cancer. Radiation exposure from various sources can increase the risk of thyroid cancer, as well as having a first-degree relative with the disease or certain genetic syndromes. People with thyroid enlargement, thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, or obesity should also consider screening for thyroid cancer.

Regular thyroid cancer screening is crucial to detect the disease early. Thyroid ultrasound can help detect abnormal structures in the thyroid gland, and a biopsy can determine if a tumor is malignant or benign. Symptoms of late-stage thyroid cancer may include difficulty breathing, swallowing or voice loss as well as other systemic symptoms if the tumor has metastasized. In addition to those with high-risk factors and suspicious symptoms should seek medical attention promptly for early detection and treatment of this disease.

Early detection and treatment can lead to better outcomes and reduced complications for individuals diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Regular check-ups are essential to ensure that any potential issues are detected early before they become serious health concerns. If you suspect you have any signs of this disease or fall under any high-risk category make sure to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider right away so that proper diagnosis and treatment can be initiated at an early stage.
