The 26.2 Step Mini Marathon is a short but impactful event that spreads awareness about the importance of preventive healthcare. Started by Denise Ibsen-Cole, a marathon runner who broke her hip in an accident, the mini marathon aims to encourage participants to prioritize their health. This event is put on by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine, with a focus on spreading awareness about cancer risks and genetic testing.

This year, the 26.2 Step Mini Marathon was held in North Omaha, an area that could benefit greatly from the message of preventive healthcare. Lisa Butler-Walker, from the UNMC Nebraska Medicine Community Collaborative, emphasized the importance of educating the black community on cancer risks and proper healthcare practices. Shanda Ross, the director of engagement for the diversity and inclusion department, highlighted the disparities faced by black people in cancer diagnoses and outcomes.

For example, black women are more likely to die from breast cancer compared to non-hispanic white women, despite being diagnosed at the same rate. Ross stressed the importance of regular screenings and primary care visits to prevent and detect cancer early. By promoting awareness and education, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine aim to empower the community to take control of their health and well-being.
