Google’s email service, Gmail, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this Monday as one of the most widely used email services globally. Driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the implementation of the assistant Gemini shaping the future of the service.

On April 1, 2004, Google announced the launch of Gmail, a free service with a storage capacity of up to 1GB at the time. This amount was equivalent to 50,000 email pages for each user. The idea behind Gmail was to address customer complaints about the poor quality of existing email services that required manual archiving and search for messages.

The development of Gmail started years before its launch in 2004 by a team of Google engineers led by Paul Buchheit. The service was based on Google search technology, free storage capacity, and speed and efficiency of use. Users no longer had to archive or delete messages and could easily search for emails using keywords.

Gmail’s storage capacity was a key advancement, providing users with 100 times more free space than other email services. Over time, Gmail integrated with other Google services like Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Talk, offering new features like forwarding multiple messages, online chats, and calls. The service was initially accessible only through invitations but later opened to everyone in 2007.

Currently, Gmail offers up to 15GB of free storage shared with Google Drive and Photos. The service continues to evolve with AI-powered features like the ability to prioritize search results and generate draft text. Google’s assistant Gemini has been integrated into Gmail to enhance user experience and provide better service.

Looking ahead, Google will continue to offer Gmail as a secure, smart, and easy-to-use email service for users worldwide. Despite its initial April Fool’s Day announcement
