Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his hopes for a major Russian offensive in the north and east of the country, specifically targeting the city of Kharkiv, as Moscow continues its assault that began on May 10. Despite recent Russian advances, Zelensky believes that the situation for Ukrainian forces has improved compared to a week ago when Russian troops unexpectedly crossed the border. However, he acknowledges that Kharkiv is still under control but not yet stabilized, with Kyiv having sent reinforcements to the city.

Zelensky also stated that Russia’s objective is to take Kharkiv, although they are aware of the challenging battle ahead. In response to the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has implemented various measures to strengthen its military capabilities, including controversial legislation lowering the age limit for military mobilization and allowing prisoners to be recruited in exchange for parole. However, Ukraine still faces shortages in resources, particularly anti-aircraft defense.

While Russia continues its offensive, Ukraine has launched attacks on several Russian regions and Crimea, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure. The situation remains volatile, with both sides engaged in active fighting as civilian casualties mount. The conflict has also spilled over into other regions, intensifying the humanitarian crisis.
