OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced the launch of a new technology called Voice Engine. This technology allows users to clone a person’s voice by recording just 15 seconds of their speech. However, due to safety concerns, especially in an election year, OpenAI has decided not to release this technology to the public at this time.

The company will preview Voice Engine with early testers who have agreed not to impersonate anyone without their consent and to disclose that the voices are AI-generated. This cautious approach is in response to the potential risks associated with generating speech that resembles people’s voices.

Voice Engine follows OpenAI’s recent filing for a trademark application for the product, indicating its interest in entering the voice assistant market to compete with products like Amazon’s Alexa. Despite other companies already selling voice-cloning technology, OpenAI is taking a careful approach to its release. The company is known for its innovative AI technologies like chatbot DALL-E and image-generator DALL-E 2. By initiating the Voice Engine project, OpenAI is expanding its portfolio of AI tools with a focus on enhancing speech recognition and digital voice assistant capabilities.
