Although he decided not to take another left-footed defender, Shaw’s versatility and potential role in switching tactics for the quarter-final against Switzerland have kept him in the conversation.
According to reports in the Times, Southgate is considering a shift from a back four to a back three formation for the upcoming game. Shaw’s ability to play as a left-sided centre-back, left wing-back, or left full-back could bring important balance to either formation if he is fit to play. With a suspension leaving a gap in the team’s defense, Shaw may be considered as a replacement for Marc Guehi in the crucial match on Saturday.
