In the face of climate change, health care systems in Houston must take immediate action to protect the health of residents. A recent report by the Center for Houston’s Future emphasizes this urgent need and offers recommendations on how to address it.

The report suggests that health care providers should advocate for policies that support decarbonization, create eco-friendly spaces in hospitals and low-income communities, and recruit health leaders and physicians to take action against climate change. Additionally, educational programs for health care professionals and students should be established to increase awareness of climate-related health issues and decarbonization efforts.

Research on climate change is also recommended, as well as tracking and publishing statistics on greenhouse gas emissions to promote accountability and reduce environmental impacts. The report notes that the U.S. healthcare sector is responsible for 8.5% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, making it a significant contributor to climate change.

Brett Perlman, the outgoing president and CEO of the Center for Houston’s Future, believes that by working together and implementing sustainable practices, health care providers can create a healthier and more resilient Houston. With the collective wisdom, resources, and innovation found in the medical community, Perlman is confident that challenges posed by climate change can be overcome.

The report also highlights the potential impact of climate-driven disasters in Houston such as extreme heat, floods, hurricanes which could worsen conditions like heatstroke respiratory illnesses cardiovascular diseases insect borne disease St Luke Health provided funding for this report
