In the ruins of Pompeii, archaeologists have made a startling discovery: what they consider to be the finest paintings in the city. Within a ballroom measuring about 15 meters long and six meters wide, frescoes depicting the Trojan War have been found. The walls are painted black, with a white mosaic floor in almost perfect condition.

The director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, noted that the black walls were likely painted to prevent the visibility of smoke from oil lamps, creating an illusion of moving paintings in the flickering lamp light during evening dinners. Researcher Daisy Dunn added that the aesthetic choice of black walls against a white floor would have been visually striking then as it is today.

The paintings date back 2,000 years and showcase themes of bravery, heroes from the Trojan War, ancient gods, and fate. One fresco depicts Helena and Paris, the figures central to the start of the Trojan War. Another painting shows Apollo’s seduction of Kassandra resulting in her prophetic abilities being disbelieved. A third painting portrays Leda and Zeus as a swan hinting at Helen’s mythological origins.

Excavations in Pompeii have uncovered tools, construction materials, and various works of art offering insight into those who lived there. Initials found on the hall wall suggest that these were owned by Aulus Rustius Verusilleto – a wealthy local politician who may have commissioned these works himself. The city was famously buried by Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD and has since become a popular tourist destination for those wanting to learn more about its history and culture.
