The United Nations Human Rights Council has passed a resolution calling for the suspension of arms sales to Israel, with 28 out of 47 members voting in favor. Finland, as a member of the Council for the term 2022-2024, supported the resolution.

This is the first time the Council has taken a position on the conflict in Gaza and emphasizes the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and human rights. The draft resolution also references the International Criminal Court’s warning about the risk of genocide in Gaza and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

As part of its commitment to upholding human rights and international law, Finland has voted in favor of this resolution. This move reflects global concern about the conflict in the Middle East and the need for humanitarian action.

In addition to this resolution, the UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss the situation in the Middle East. Despite a previous resolution calling for an immediate halt to fighting, the situation in Gaza remains volatile. However, this resolution marks a step towards resolving this longstanding conflict through peaceful means.
