Humpback whales, known for their unique vocalizations, have been observed mating in an unexpected way. Two male humpback whales were caught on camera mating in a behavior that has not been seen before in this species. This is the first time same-sex mating has been documented in humpback whales.

The photographers who captured the images were boating off the coast of Maui in January 2022 when they encountered the mating pair. Despite it being illegal to approach humpback whales in Hawaii, one of the whales approached the boat. One of the whales appeared to be injured and covered in lice, possibly explaining why it was weaker during the mating interaction.

The stronger of the two whales repeatedly approached the weaker one until they eventually mated. The behavior was captured on camera multiple times, providing valuable insights into humpback whale mating behavior. The researchers who published the observations and images in a scientific journal article interpreted the behavior in various ways, including as a form of alliance-building or territorial defense.

Overall, this unexpected mating behavior highlights the complexity and diversity of animal behavior in the wild. It also emphasizes the importance of continued research and observation to learn more about these fascinating marine mammals.
