Sinusitis, a common disease that affects the sinuses located in different areas of the face, is usually triggered by a cold or flu. The maxillary sinuses are commonly affected by this condition. While acute sinusitis typically resolves on its own, chronic sinusitis can persist for weeks or months. Symptoms include fever, pain, fatigue, and a blocked or stuffy nose. Several factors can make the sinuses more vulnerable to infections, such as smoking, allergies, and weakened immune systems.

Diagnosis is usually based on medical history and physical examination. Treatment options may include saline nasal washes, inhaling steam, over-the-counter pain relievers, antibiotics for bacterial infections, and surgery for chronic sinusitis that does not improve with conventional treatments. Complementary medicine treatments such as acupuncture and homeopathy may also be beneficial.
