An E. coli outbreak in the United Kingdom has resulted in at least 275 people falling ill, with one person tragically losing their life. The outbreak, which caused 122 hospitalizations, was linked to lettuce found in pre-packaged sandwiches, according to the U.K. Health Security Agency.

Two patients infected with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli passed away in May, with one death likely being linked to the infection. Both individuals had underlying medical conditions. E. coli bacteria are typically found in the intestines of healthy individuals and animals but can cause a range of serious conditions, such as urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, and blood poisoning.

As a response to the outbreak, companies producing sandwiches sold by major grocery and retail chains in the U.K. voluntarily recalled their products, including wraps and salads, starting on June 14. More than 80% of those affected showed symptoms of bloody diarrhea, reported the UKHSA. However, new cases of the illness have decreased, and the investigation into the outbreak’s source is still ongoing.

The UKHSA stated that this is an ongoing investigation into the source of this outbreak and is working closely with local authorities to identify any potential sources of contamination.

It is essential for individuals who have consumed pre-packed sandwiches containing lettuce since June 14th to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with Shiga toxin-producing E.coli infection such as bloody diarrhea or abdominal pain.

The UKHSA advised that consumers should avoid purchasing pre-packaged sandwiches containing lettuce from major grocery and retail chains until further notice while they continue to investigate this matter thoroughly.

This recent incident serves as a reminder that food safety is crucial for public health and highlights how important it is for companies to take responsibility for ensuring that their products are safe for consumption.
