Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, police were called to the Westfield Bondi Junction mall in the city’s east following reports of a stabbing spree. Witnesses reported seeing Joel Cauchi, a 40-year-old man from Queensland, running through the mall with a knife, randomly attacking people.

Cauchi was known to have mental health issues, and authorities do not believe the attack was driven by any particular ideology. The incident claimed the lives of six individuals, with two of the victims believed to have no family in Australia. The community is left in shock and mourning in the aftermath of this senseless tragedy.

Assistant Commissioner Cooke disclosed that Cauchi was shot and killed by a police officer in response to the incident. Numerous others were injured in the attack, with many in serious but stable condition, including a young child. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and are providing support to those affected by the violence.
