TikTok, a leading social media platform, has announced that it will begin labeling content created using artificial intelligence (AI) when it is uploaded from outside sources. This move is aimed at combatting misinformation and making it clear to viewers when content is AI-generated. In a statement, the company stated that while AI provides creative opportunities, it can confuse or mislead viewers if they are unaware of its origin.

The labeling of AI-generated content began on images and videos on Thursday and will soon extend to audio-only content. The collaboration with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity has enabled the use of Content Credentials technology, which attaches metadata to AI-generated content, allowing TikTok to instantly recognize and label such content. The labels will remain on the content even when downloaded, helping users identify AI-generated content made on TikTok and learn more about its creation or editing process.

TikTok’s commitment to transparency in online content goes beyond just labeling AI-generated content. The company also requires users to label all AI-generated content with realistic images, audio, and video as part of its policy. Moreover, TikTok has collaborated with Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative to further support the adoption of Content Credentials within the industry.

In an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Thursday, Adam Presser, TikTok’s Head of Operations & Trust and Safety, expressed the platform’s dedication to using AI for creativity while ensuring transparency between fact and fiction. He emphasized that this move would enhance user experience by promoting authenticity in online content.

Overall, TikTok’s efforts towards promoting transparency and authenticity in online content are commendable as they help users make informed decisions about what they consume online. With its partnership with Adobe and other initiatives aimed at promoting transparency in online media, TikTok continues to be a leader in shaping the future of social media platforms.
