The men’s hockey team at Michigan State University will be represented by USA Hockey in the upcoming World Championship. Trey Augustine, a goalie and Detroit Red Wings prospect, was added to the roster on Sunday, replacing Detroit forward Dylan Larkin due to injury.

Augustine, a 19-year-old freshman at MSU this season, has been instrumental in the Spartans’ first-ever Big Ten Championship and their first national tournament appearance since 2012. In 35 games, Augustine posted three shutouts, a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average, earning him Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors. He also won Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and was voted the Most Valuable Player award by his team.

Augustine is from South Lyon and is a product of the USA Hockey Development Program. He was selected by Detroit in the second round in 2023 and joins other Red Wings players on the roster including goalie Alex Lyon and defenseman Jeff Petry. The coaching staff includes Derek Lalonde as head coach and Alex Westlund as goaltending coach. Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA backstopping them to a gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. This past season for MSU he quickly became a fan favorite during their best season in over a decade with several standout performances including a 34-save shutout at Ohio State in November and saving 60 out of 64 shots against No.1 Wisconsin among others
