The UAE has experienced a significant increase in the number of patents registered, reaching a total of 5,000 in 2023, with 3,415 patent applications filed in the same year. This represents a 19.5% increase from the previous year, highlighting the country’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and supporting entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and projects.

The Ministry of Economy emphasizes the importance of intellectual property as a key goal for sustainable development across all sectors, particularly in economic sectors. To achieve this goal, the UAE has implemented a proactive approach by creating a legislative and regulatory environment that safeguards intellectual property rights and supports entrepreneurs.

Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, emphasized that the UAE has established a pioneering legislative framework for intellectual property that adheres to global standards. The country has implemented three laws to regulate and protect industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights. Additionally, it has launched 11 initiatives to support intellectual property applications. These measures have contributed significantly to creating an environment conducive to intellectual property activities and innovation with an impressive increase in patent applications in the country.

To raise awareness about national laws related to intellectual works on World Intellectual Property Day on April 26th every year, the Ministry of Economy is organizing seminars, workshops and competitions from April 22nd to 30th. These events aim to highlight how intellectual property rights contribute to stimulating innovation, supporting science and technology fields and promoting sustainability in intellectual works.

This year’s World Intellectual Property Day focuses on how innovation can contribute to achieving the goals set out in “We Are the Emirates 2031,” positioning the UAE as a global hub for economic growth and sustainability. The Ministry of Economy remains committed to providing support and opportunities for talented individuals with creative ideas who can transform these ideas into successful projects contributing positively to economic growth and sustainability.
