On Tuesday, officials from the city of Pico Rivera made an announcement that has left many residents feeling concerned. The Pico Rivera Sports Arena and other community venues may disappear due to repair work on the Whittier Narrows Dam. The Army Corps of Engineers has stated that critical repairs are necessary to prevent flooding, which would impact the sports stadium, golf course, and Streamland Park.

The closure of these facilities is expected to have a negative impact on the city’s economy, resulting in income and job losses. The Pico Rivera Sports Arena has been a popular destination since it opened in 1979, hosting concerts, rodeos, and cultural events for the Hispanic community in Los Angeles County.

Streamland Park is also at risk of closure, which would lead to the discontinuation of the Pico Boys Baseball League, which has been running for 68 years. This news has caused concern among residents who value these facilities and their contribution to the local community.

To address this issue, Mayor Andrew Lara introduced a $125 million revitalization program that includes the development of new parks, open spaces, and sports facilities. Lara emphasized that the city is working to secure funding to mitigate the impact of the closures and capitalize on new opportunities for growth and development. While this may bring some relief to those concerned about losing these valuable assets, it remains to be seen what will happen next with regard to repairs on the Whittier Narrows Dam and potential closures of community venues in Pico Rivera.
