The New Orleans Saints defense has taken on a more prominent role since Drew Brees retired, and it’s looking like they will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Bleacher Report ranked the Saints as the 11th-best defense in the NFL going into the season, taking into account both offseason moves and last year’s performance.
Despite some concerns about the age of key players like Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu, who are all 32 years old or older, there is confidence in the Saints defense under Dennis Allen. Retaining last year’s defensive core has only added to their faith in the unit, which has performed reliably comparable to the Sean Payton era offense.
One area where the Saints defense needs improvement is their pass rush. In 2023, their pass rush percentage and sacks were both poor. However, adding Chase Young to the mix is expected to help address this deficiency and improve overall performance moving forward.
Despite these challenges, signs indicate that the Saints defense is on an upward trajectory rather than a downward one. With improvements expected in the pass rush and key players remaining intact, there is optimism for a stronger defensive showing in the upcoming season.
