Berlin’s zoo is marking a special occasion as it celebrates the 67th birthday of Fatou, the oldest resident gorilla in the world. The zoo believes that Fatou, who was born in 1957 and arrived at the zoo in West Berlin in 1959, holds this title. In anticipation of her official birthday on Saturday, keepers treated her to a special meal of fruit and vegetables.

According to vet Andre Schüle, Fatou is not only the oldest resident gorilla at the zoo but also in captivity. Although wild animals typically live shorter lives than those in captivity, Fatou’s status as the oldest gorilla is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon. Despite her age, Fatou lives independently and tends to keep her distance from other gorillas at the zoo.

Fatou’s honor as the oldest resident at the zoo was recently obtained following Ingo, a flamingo who had lived at the zoo since 1955 and was believed to be at least 75 years old, passed away earlier this year. Now, Fatou holds this title and continues to be cared for and celebrated by her keepers.
