The Polybahn in Zurich is a unique train ride experience that I found to be unlike any other I’ve had before. This funicular takes riders on a steep incline through the hilly Swiss city, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. Despite its rich history, which dates back to 1886, the fare is incredibly affordable at just over $1, making it an accessible and enjoyable travel experience for visitors.

As a journalist who has traveled on trains in multiple countries, including the US, Canada, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Germany, I have experienced a wide range of rail journeys. Whether booking different classes on day trips or overnight rides, I’ve encountered everything from luxurious high-speed trains to old-fashioned steam locomotives. However, nothing compares to the thrilling ride on the Polybahn in Zurich in 2022.

The Polybahn is a funicular that operates like a train on a steep incline, providing riders with a roller coaster-like experience. It offers panoramic views of the city and is an exciting tourist attraction for all ages. For history buffs, knowing that this transportation mode has been operational since 1886 adds to its appeal even more. And at such an affordable price point of just over $1, it’s one of the most enjoyable travel activities I have ever done.
