The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is currently seeking a new senior social media manager to lead the museum’s 11 million art-loving followers across various platforms. The role requires developing and overseeing the museum’s global social media strategy, publishing and moderating content, and leading innovation in the field. With a salary range of $110,000-$120,000, this position is a high-profile job in the museum world.

Claire Lanier has held the position since 2019 and saw significant growth during the pandemic lockdowns, with an increase of over 200,000 social media followers in just two months. Engagement on Instagram alone rose by 95% within the first two weeks of lockdown. Lanier emphasized hard work, research, and building social media relationships as essential elements for creating successful content. Under her management, social media followers on the Met’s platforms increased by almost 1.3 million from March 2020 to March 2024.

In her LinkedIn announcement of her departure from the Met, Lanier expressed gratitude for the experience and noted that working at the museum during a pandemic was once in a lifetime. She encouraged prospective applicants to consider taking a break from full-time work after relocating to Paris but also highlighted that working at the Met can be life-changing despite its challenges.
