John and Kristen Owens, a couple who own a farm and small business in Murrells Inlet, are voicing their opposition to an 80-acre development proposal that would place 100 homes across from Ranch Haven Drive near Highway 707. The area, which was once quiet farmland just 20 years ago, is now plagued by issues such as flooding, traffic, and overdevelopment.

In April 2005, the Owens moved to McDowell Shortcut Road and purchased their 11 acres in 2018. They made a commitment to keep their land as a working farm. However, they have since seen 60 homes go up next door and are now facing the prospect of additional homes being built across the street.

Many residents, including the Owens, are concerned about the impact that the proposed development would have on the area. McDowell Shortcut Road is already at 95% capacity, and there are concerns about schools exceeding their maximum enrollment. The Owens are also worried about the potential flooding and loss of surrounding vegetation that would result from flattening another 80 acres.

The Owens want Horry County leaders to recognize the strain that continued development is putting on the area and to consider preserving land for future generations. The planning commission is set to meet on July 11 to make their recommendation to the county council, with some officials believing that the project will face significant opposition.
