The Back Door, a well-known dive bar located at Mid City Mall on Bardstown Road, has permanently closed its doors. The owners of the bar announced the closure on its Facebook page, stating that the business would be shutting down “effective immediately” after 39 years in operation.

The bar, which was long owned by John Dant, faced challenges after his passing in October 2023. Despite efforts by Dant’s family members to keep the business running, they ultimately decided to close The Back Door. In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, the owners expressed their gratitude to customers for their support over the years and encouraged them to cherish their memories of the bar.

The Back Door was known for its delicious wings, pool tables, and a giant mural featuring hundreds of regulars’ faces. The bar had become a beloved spot for a diverse group of patrons who considered it a second home. John Dant had previously described the bar as a place where everyone felt welcome and comfortable.

While The Back Door may have closed its doors, its legacy will live on through the memories of its loyal customers. For more information, contact reporter Bailey Loosemore at bloosemore@courier-journal.com or follow her on Twitter @bloosemore.
