Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a truce in the Gaza Strip. However, Washington had doubts about Netanyahu’s ability to handle a complex operation in Rafah and warned of a potential famine in northern Gaza.

Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that almost half of the Israeli hostages in Gaza are believed to be deceased, sparking disagreement within the Israeli negotiating team. Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi outlined five essential principles for negotiations, emphasizing the return of displaced persons, withdrawal of Israeli forces, humanitarian aid access, and reconstruction. He stressed that these principles are crucial for any agreement or prisoner exchange deal.

On the other hand, the US administration expressed concern about Netanyahu’s leadership and ability to manage a large-scale operation in Gaza. The US State Department warned of a looming famine in northern Gaza due to a scarcity of aid trucks. The UN-backed food security assessment painted a dire picture and urged immediate action to prevent famine and address malnutrition. The official highlighted the urgent need for increased aid distribution to meet nutritional requirements for all age groups in Gaza.

The situation in Gaza remains critical, with a potential famine looming and escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas. Efforts are underway to reach a truce and prevent a humanitarian crisis, but challenges persist in ensuring adequate aid delivery to vulnerable populations in Gaza. Addressing the root causes of the conflict and prioritizing the well-being of civilians are essential steps to achieving lasting peace in the region.
