Tennessee’s doubles team of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase concluded their 2024 season with a historic semifinal appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championships on Friday. The duo lost to Pepperdine’s Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Despite their loss, Cabezas and Tomase made history by becoming the first Lady Vols’ doubles team to reach the semifinals since 2013 and the first tandem to do so under head coach Alison Ojeda.

Their successful season saw them win three matches in Stillwater and close with a record of 16-8, including six victories against ranked opponents. By reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament, Cabezas and Tomase earned ITA All-American status. The duo had a standout year, making a name for themselves in the collegiate tennis world.

Cabezas and Tomase’s semifinal appearance marks a significant achievement in their careers, showcasing their talent and dedication throughout the season. Although they fell short of winning the championship match, they can be proud of their accomplishments and their impact on Tennessee women’s tennis. Their success will inspire future Lady Vols’ tennis players to strive for greatness on both individual and team levels.
