Temple University Health System announced on Friday that Richard Newell, the current CEO of Tower Health’s Phoenixville and Pottstown Hospitals, will be taking over as CEO of Chestnut Hill Hospital. He will begin his new role on April 8. According to Temple’s president and CEO Abhi Rastogi, Newell’s extensive experience in healthcare operations and his commitment to quality and service-oriented care make him well-suited for the position at Chestnut Hill.

Newell will replace John Cacciamani, who had served as CEO of Chestnut Hill for 12 years. Temple decided to replace Cacciamani and other key executives in order to bring in new leadership to drive integration and expansion of services at the hospital. Rastogi emphasized that new leadership was necessary to move at a different pace and achieve higher levels of excellence at Chestnut Hill.

Temple University acquired Chestnut Hill in partnership with Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Redeemer Health at the beginning of 2023. Ownership of the hospital is divided, with Temple holding a 60% stake, while PCOM and Redeemer each own 20%. January marked the first profitable month for Chestnut Hill since the acquisition, a positive development highlighted by Temple officials.

The changes at Chestnut Hill reflect Temple University’s commitment to integrating the hospital into its health system and driving improvements in patient care and service delivery. With a new CEO leading the way, Chestnut Hill is poised to achieve greater levels of excellence in the future.
