The New York Jets have signed running back Tarik Cohen to a one-year deal, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Cohen, who will turn 29 in July, has not played in the NFL since 2020 when he was with the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury which sidelined him for the entire 2021 season. After being released by the Bears in March 2022, Cohen suffered another injury during an offseason workout which further delayed his return to the field.

Despite these setbacks, Cohen announced his attempt at a comeback and was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in September 2023. However, he was released by the Panthers earlier this month. The Jets have expressed their excitement about having Cohen on board, especially due to his versatility as an explosive playmaker.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh sees potential in Cohen, particularly in utilizing his skills on kick returns. Cohen has a proven track record as a return specialist, with significant experience in both kickoffs and punts during his time with the Bears. Saleh believes that with Cohen’s abilities, he could make a significant impact on special teams for the Jets.

During his tenure with the Bears, Cohen showcased his talents as both a running back and pass-catching threat. He accumulated over 1,100 rushing yards and scored five touchdowns on the ground. Additionally, he was productive in the passing game, catching over 200 passes for 1,575 yards and scoring nine touchdowns. With Cohen’s return to the NFL
