Tang Qianting Breaks Asian Record in Women’s 100m Breaststroke at Chinese National Swimming Championships

The 2024 Chinese National Swimming Championships continued with Day 3 in Shenzhen, featuring 20-year-old Tang Qianting who once again impressed in the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke. After setting a new Asian Record of 1:04.68 in the semi-final the previous night, Tang went even faster to secure gold with a time of 1:04.39 and secure her spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Tang’s race consisted of an opening split of 29.64 and a closing split of 34.75, marking only the second time in her career she has gone under the 1:05 barrier. Prior to this race, her personal best was the Chinese national record of 1:05.27 set at the World Championships, where she also won the gold medal. Comparing Tang’s recent performances to the current world record of 1:04.13 set by Lilly King in 2017, Tang was quicker on both the way out and the way back.
