On Wednesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that a police officer accused of murdering a student from the teachers’ college in March has been arrested. The incident took place in Ayotzinapa and has reignited the anger of the community that still seeks justice for the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

Following the incident, there were protests and unrest in Guerrero. The state’s Secretary of Security and the Interior both resigned after investigations revealed that Gomez was unarmed when approached by the police, leading to accusations of abuse of authority.

During his morning press conference, President López Obrador stated that the officer responsible for the murder of Yanqui Gomez, as well as others involved, are now in custody. The arrest was made at a guarded ranch, and investigations are ongoing.

The disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa remains one of Mexico’s most infamous human rights violations. Despite efforts to investigate the case and locate the missing students, progress has been slow. The arrest of 132 individuals has been ordered in connection to the case, including 14 soldiers and the former attorney general Jesus Murillo Karam.
