In a recent event, Tampa Bay Rays President Matt Silverman shared an overview of the redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District. This project is set to be the largest in the city’s 136-year history, with a $6.5 billion development plan that includes a new 30,000-seat ballpark, 4,800 residential units, 1,200 affordable/workforce housing units on and off-site and 8 million square feet of mixed-use development.

Silverman emphasized the importance of honoring the history of the Gas Plant District while envisioning its transformation into a vibrant neighborhood that is a destination for living, working and playing. The redevelopment plan includes new office buildings, hotels and shops to ensure continuous activity throughout the year and not just during baseball season.

The first phase of the project, which involves building the proposed ballpark, is expected to open in 2028. However, the entire project will likely take close to two decades to complete in its entirety. The vision is to create a dynamic and thriving district that will cater to residents, workers and visitors alike contributing to the growth and vitality of the city for years to come.
