Amidst rising Chinese military pressure, Taiwan is determined to strengthen its self-defense and asymmetric defense capabilities. The island’s president, Lai Ching-te (William Lai), has emphasized that Taiwan will not surrender to pressure from China and will defend its national sovereignty, democracy, and constitutional way of life.

Recently, CNN reported that the United States has approved the sale of over a thousand small armed drones to Taiwan for 360 million dollars. Taiwan aims to use these drones for reconnaissance operations and intensify deterrence against China. Similar to munitions that can be quickly launched, the small armed drones are an effective tool for asymmetric warfare strategies.

The sale of small armed drones has sparked criticism from China, but Taipei remains resolute in its commitment to defending its autonomy and democratic way of life. Many analysts have suggested that Taiwan focus on asymmetric warfare strategies as they could make countering China more challenging than conventional weapons in the event of an invasion. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is committed to supporting Taiwan’s defense capabilities despite objections from Beijing.
