The health ministry at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church organized a Men’s Health Fair in honor of Men’s Mental Health Month in June. This event was inspired by the success of a previous event held during Heart Health Month in January, where they saw the need to educate the men in their congregation about their health.

Sabrina Dickey, a professor at Florida State University’s College of Nursing and a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist for over 15 years, used her nursing background to serve God by educating others about their health. Jonathan Peterson, a deacon and usher at the church with a background in health, approached her with the idea of creating a safe space for men to discuss mental health and general health issues, which led to the organization of this weekend event.

Preparations for the Men’s Health Fair began in April, after a survey conducted by the health ministry revealed that the men in the congregation were interested in learning about kidney disease and prostate cancer. These topics will be discussed at the free health fair, along with other relevant health issues.

Speakers at the event include Dr. Lenny Marshall from Big Bend Hospice, Dr. Daryl O. Crenshaw, a Nephrologist, and Andrew Shaw, a mental health professional. Free medical screenings will be provided by Neighborhood Medical Center’s Mobile Unit, and attendees can also enjoy light refreshments and lunch.
