Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has temporarily suspended its Threads micromessaging application in Turkey. The decision was made due to a provisional ruling by the country’s Competition Authority, which prohibits the exchange of data between Instagram and Threads. According to the Competition Authority, this practice allows Meta to gain information about users and use it for commercial activities, creating unfair competition due to its dominant position.

On April 15th, Meta was ordered not to exchange data while an investigation is ongoing. Due to this provisional measure, Meta had no choice but to suspend Threads in Turkey. However, the company stated that it will continue to negotiate with Turkish authorities to bring the application back online at a later date. The Competition Authority also imposed a daily fine on Meta as part of another investigation related to data sharing notification messages sent to users.
