Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was seriously injured in an assassination attempt, has spoken publicly for the first time since the attack. In a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Fico said he “forgives” the attacker and announced plans to gradually resume his official duties from the end of June.

The incident that left Fico critically injured occurred on May 15 after a cabinet meeting in the small town of Handlova. He had to undergo two operations and the suspected assassin, 71-year-old amateur writer Juraj Cintula, was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody, being investigated for attempted murder.

Fico was released from the hospital at the end of May and is now continuing to recover from the attack at home.
