In 2024, SUNY Niagara’s surgical technology program achieved a historic milestone as all 15 students in the graduating cohort passed the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certified surgical technologist (CST) exam with a 100% pass rate. This remarkable accomplishment was celebrated by Surgical Technology Program Coordinator Gemma Fournier, who expressed her pride in the graduates and highlighted the dedication to excellence from both students and faculty as the reason for this achievement.

In 2014, New York state legislation mandated that health care facilities employ individuals who meet specific educational requirements and possess the CST credential. The majority of SUNY Niagara graduates are now employed within health care and ambulatory surgery centers throughout the Buffalo and Niagara area.

The surgical technology program at SUNY Niagara equips students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on training necessary to excel as entry-level certified surgical technologists. Vice President of Academic Affairs Lydia Ulatowski praised the program as a cornerstone of the strong nursing, physical, and allied health programs offered at the university.
