On Saturday, June 1, 2024, Christopher Newport University in Virginia hosted the STEM Community Day in partnership with Newport News Public Schools. The event aimed to highlight the various aspects of STEM fields and careers through nearly 100 exhibitors.

Over 3,000 community members attended the event and were treated to hands-on experiences that showcased the importance of STEM fields and careers. Educators from the National Institute of Aerospace’s Center for Integrated STEM Education (NIA-CISE) led several activities that engaged attendees of all ages.

One such activity involved measuring tree height using a clinometer. Attendees were given a kit to make their own clinometers at home after participating in the activity. Another activity focused on Earth’s energy balance, where participants selected cards with different activities that either reflect energy back to space or are absorbed by Earth. They had to decide whether those activities were part of the “in” or “out” side of Earth’s energy balance, engaging them in a fun and educational way.

The event was a great success, providing attendees with valuable insights into the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It not only showcased the importance of STEM fields and careers but also allowed participants to engage in hands-on activities and learn from educators and experts in the field. Such events play a significant role in inspiring and nurturing young minds to pursue careers in STEM and contribute to the advancement of society through innovation and discovery.

Overall, it was an excellent opportunity for everyone who attended to learn more about STEM fields and how they can apply this knowledge in their daily lives.
