I have been splitting my time between Los Angeles and Athens for the past few years. These two cities are vastly different from each other, with Athens boasting a more relaxed beach culture and public recreational spaces compared to the US. However, traffic is a significant difference between the two cities. In LA, sitting in clogged traffic on the freeway is a common occurrence, while in Athens, I hardly ever encounter traffic.
I spent my first few years of life in Greece before moving to the US. But despite being away for several years, I couldn’t stay away from my beautiful birth country for long. Now, I split my time between Los Angeles and Athens for work. During my six months in the US, I spend the other half of the year in Greece. After several years of traveling back and forth between both countries, I’ve noticed many stark differences.
One of the most significant differences that strike me is how laid-back beach culture is in Athens compared to California. In Athens, people tend to be more relaxed and enjoy their time at the beach without any worries or stressors. On the other hand, in California, beach culture tends to be more competitive and fast-paced.
Another significant difference between these two cities is public recreational spaces. In Athens, there are many parks and outdoor areas where people can relax and enjoy nature. The parks are often filled with locals enjoying picnics or playing sports like basketball or volleyball.
Traffic is another area where these two cities differ significantly. As mentioned earlier, traffic congestion is common on the freeways in LA but almost non-existent in Athens.
In conclusion, spending time in both Los Angeles and Athens has been an eye-opening experience for me as I’ve noticed many stark differences between these two cities. From their laid-back beach culture to their public recreational spaces and even their traffic patterns, there is so much to love about both of these unique destinations!
