South Africa’s hopes of challenging for a medal in the 4x400m relay have been significantly boosted with the inclusion of Wayde van Niekerk on the team. The trio, consisting of Van Niekerk, rising star Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay, is expected to compete at Paris 2024.

Pillay recently set a new personal best of 44.31 seconds in the 400m, making him the second-fastest South African in the event after Van Niekerk. All three athletes have met Olympic qualifying times and will be competing in one-lap sprint events at the World Relays, which serve as a qualifying event for Paris 2024.

The trio forms the core of South Africa’s 4x400m relay team and aims to continue the country’s success on the global stage. In past championships, South African teams have achieved podium finishes, with former national record holders and other talented athletes contributing to their relay legacy.

Clarence Munyai, Akani Simbine and Wayde van Niekerk are among South Africa’s top male athletes who will be participating in men’s relay events at the World Relays, hoping to secure their spot at Paris 2024. With this strong foundation of experienced athletes and rising talents, South Africa has hope for success at upcoming World Athletics Relays and potential medal contention at Paris 2024.
