This Saturday, Slovakia will hold its second and final round of presidential elections to determine the successor of current President Zuzana Caputova. Despite being eligible under the Constitution, Caputova will not be participating in the elections for personal reasons. Polls had previously indicated that she was the clear favorite for re-election.

The liberal former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok is the frontrunner in the second round after winning the first round in March. He defeated social democrat Peter Pellegrini, who presented himself as a figure of reconciliation in a polarized country. Korcok has promised to act as a counterbalance to the left-wing nationalist government of Prime Minister Robert Fico. The role of the President in Slovakia may be ceremonial, but it includes important functions such as ratifying international treaties, appointing judges, and vetoing laws.

The country has been divided, as evidenced by protests against the Fico government in March over a bill that threatened the state radio and television station. President Caputova herself criticized the bill, highlighting the prevailing divisions in the country.
