A funeral Mass will be offered on April 17 for Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Margaret “Peggy” McCabe, who passed away on April 7 at the age of 80. Originally from Philadelphia, Sister Peggy dedicated her life to serving those in need, particularly the homeless with mental health issues.

Sister Peggy began her ministry as a teacher at parishes in Illchester and Washington, D.C., where she was educated in Catholic parish schools and West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. After professing vows with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at high school, she continued her education with a bachelor’s degree in education from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., and later pursued a master’s degree in teaching and counseling from the same institution.

Driven by a calling to work directly with homeless individuals, particularly those dealing with mental health issues, Sister Peggy obtained a second master’s degree in social work with a mental health specialization from The Catholic University of America in 1987. She served as a crisis social worker and later as the crisis program director for Crossing Place under the Potomac Residence Club in Washington, D.C., before moving on to serve as an administrator at Villa Julie Residence, a retirement and care facility within the Notre Dame de Namur community.

Upon completing a clinical pastoral education program at the age of 61 in 2004, Sister Peggy spent five years as a hospital chaplain and family liaison in Baltimore before retiring to volunteer at the SNDdeN development office and eventually becoming a resident at Villa Julie before moving to Mount Notre Dame Health Center in Cincinnati.

The funeral Mass for Sister Peggy will take place on April 17th at the chapel located within the SNDdeN Province facility in Cincinnati.
