During the Ong Bon Pagoda Festival in Lai Thieu, many people experienced symptoms of food poisoning after eating free bread and dumplings provided by a charity group. The festival took place on April 3 in Lai Thieu ward, Thuan An city, where attendees were given bread and dumplings to enjoy. However, after consuming these items, many people began feeling unwell, with symptoms such as stomachaches, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue.
A total of 47 people, mostly young participants from the lion and dragon groups serving at the festival, were hospitalized due to food poisoning. While 5 individuals with mild symptoms have been discharged, 42 others remain in the hospital for monitoring. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident and have taken samples of the food for testing.
The Ong Bon Pagoda Festival is a traditional Chinese event in Binh Duong held annually to honor ancestors of pottery on the 25th day of the lunar calendar. The festival features various rituals, processions, performances, and activities such as lion and dragon dancing. Ong Bon is rotated among temples each year according to Chinese customs leading to a festival every four years.
