The Premier League has experienced a significant increase in goals per 90 minutes from the 2022-23 season, rising from 1.31 to 1.44. Despite all leagues implementing extra added time, the Premier League has seen the highest increase in goals per 90 minutes. The average added time per match in the Premier League through October was over 11 and a half minutes.
Upon closer analysis, it was found that Sheffield United, a newly promoted side, has been conceding goals at an alarming rate. With 77 goals conceded in 29 games at a rate of 2.66 goals per game, they are on track to break records for most goals conceded in a 38-game season. Additionally, they have scored the most own goals in a top-five league this season, further highlighting their struggles.
The financial disparities between the Premier League and the Championship continue to widen, which may be contributing to the rise in scoring in the Premier League. Newly promoted sides like Sheffield United are more vulnerable defensively due to their lack of experience and resources compared to established elite teams. Without intervention, the gap between elite teams and newly promoted clubs may continue to grow.
