According to a report in the “Bild” newspaper, Mats Hummels, the Rio world champion, will not be part of the national team’s squad for the home European Championships this summer. The 35-year-old will not be named in the squad by national coach Julian Nagelsmann who will be presenting the squad on Thursday. Despite being included in a unique campaign by the German Football Association announcing some names over the past few days, including Hummel’s Borussia Dortmund teammate Nico Schlotterbeck, there was no official confirmation of Hummels being left out of the squad as of Tuesday afternoon.

Hummels had been part of Nagelsmann’s first few games with Germany in autumn 2023 but was not selected for international friendly matches in France and against the Netherlands last March. The experienced central defender had been hoping to make a return to international football but it seems he will miss out on this opportunity. On June 1st, Hummels will play in the Champions League final with BVB against Real Madrid in London.

In addition to Schlotterbeck and Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, Koch from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Rüdiger from Real Madrid are also part of the German European Championship squad. Tah and Rüdiger are Nagelsmann’s regular central defenders and he has emphasized his reliance on young challengers in the squad. Anton from VfB Stuttgart is likely to secure the last available spot in the squad as a defender.
