In recent days, the Environmental Health Department in Albuquerque shut down five restaurants within and around Coronado Mall. Some of the reasons for the closures included evidence of rodent infestation, live and dead cockroaches, not properly using hair nets, and having holes in walls. The restaurants that were shut down include Cheesecake Factory, Longhorn Steakhouse, Keva Juice, Panda Express, and Sbarro.

Alan McLean, the general manager with Cheese and Coffee Cafe, located down the street from the mall, was surprised to learn that some of the businesses that were shutdown were chain restaurants. McLean emphasized the importance of taking care of the product to ensure it meets health inspection standards. He explained that family-owned businesses like his undergo surprise health inspections to ensure compliance with regulations regarding food temperature, labeling, and cleanliness. McLean stressed that proper labeling and dating of products, as well as maintaining appropriate food temperatures, are key aspects of passing health inspections.

After meeting health department standards, Cheesecake Factory, Longhorn Steakhouse, and Panda Express have reopened. However, Keva Juice and Sbarro remain closed pending further inspection. This incident highlights the importance of food safety regulations and the need for restaurants to maintain strict standards to ensure the health and well-being of their customers. It is a reminder that no matter how big or small a restaurant is, they must adhere to these regulations to protect their customers from any potential harm.
