State Senator Joe Bellino believes that the proposed tax increase on tobacco and vaping products will negatively impact small businesses. Bellino, who previously owned a retail store near the Ohio border, personally experienced the consequences of a significant tax hike under Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s administration. His store saw a 25% decrease in business overnight, as customers began purchasing tobacco products in neighboring states to avoid the increased tax.

As the anti-smoking lobby pushes for higher taxes on vaping and e-cigarettes to deter youth usage, Bellino is advocating for alternative methods to keep these products away from children. While he supports efforts to eliminate underage vaping, he is hesitant to endorse the tax increase proposed in the current legislation. Bellino, along with other legislators, is urging the public health department coalition to explore different strategies for preventing youth smoking without burdening businesses with additional taxes.

Bellino acknowledges the importance of protecting children from harmful habits but believes that alternative solutions should be considered. As the senate prepares for public hearings on the proposed tax hike, Bellino remains firm in his opposition to the bill in its current form. He is open to potential amendments that address his concerns and prioritize the well-being of both children and small businesses impacted by the legislation.
