Debanhi Escobar’s disappearance and subsequent feminicide two years ago have sparked international outrage and brought attention to the issue of violence against women in Mexico. Despite several hypotheses about the events, the investigation into her case has not progressed much. Escobar’s parents, Mario Escobar and Dolores Bazaldúa, expressed their frustration in an interview with EFE, stating that authorities have not done enough to move the case forward.

Escobar disappeared after attending a party in Escobedo, Nuevo León, and her body was found 12 days later in a cistern near where she was last seen alive. The photograph of Escobar standing alone on the side of a highway went viral and contributed to the case gaining international attention. With President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s term coming to an end, Escobar’s parents believe that authorities are not prioritizing their daughter’s case.

In response to this, Escobar’s parents have been advocating for justice for their daughter, meeting with authorities in Mexico City to push for progress in the investigation. They have also requested new information be incorporated into the case file to define responsibilities. Escobar’s father emphasized the need to find those responsible for his daughter’s disappearance and feminicide.

In addition to seeking justice for their daughter, Debanhi Escobar is now a candidate for federal deputy for the opposition Citizen Movement party. She is advocating for laws against disappearance and feminicide to prevent other families from going through similar tragedies. Despite facing challenges in seeking justice for her daughter, Escobar’s parents remain determined to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that her memory is not forgotten.
