As the new head coach of the Seahawks, Mike Macdonald recently expressed his confidence in Geno Smith as the team’s starting quarterback. Despite twice declining to commit to Smith, Macdonald now states that he does not anticipate a quarterback competition between him and Sam Howell. Macdonald recognizes Howell as a talented young player with a bright future, but for now, Geno Smith will remain the team’s starter while Howell will serve as the backup.

Geno Smith, who is 33 years old and has started five games in the past seven seasons before becoming the starter in 2022, taking over for Russell Wilson, has accumulated a record of 17-15 in the last two seasons, throwing 50 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Macdonald praised Smith’s resilience and growth over the years, as well as his leadership qualities and capability as a quarterback.

Meanwhile, Drew Lock, who competed with Smith for the starting job, left in free agency to join the Giants. In exchange, the Seahawks acquired Sam Howell, who started all 17 games for Washington last season. Howell threw 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions but showed promise despite some struggles. The Seahawks see potential in Howell but have decided to keep Geno Smith as their starting quarterback for now.
