In Saxony-Anhalt, there has been a significant increase in cases of violence in family or intimate relationships. The statistics are alarming, with nearly 8,000 cases reported in 2023, representing a 30 percent increase from five years earlier. This means that there is approximately one case of domestic violence every hour.

The majority of recorded instances of violence occurred within relationships, with 5,600 incidents reported last year. In three out of four cases, the suspects were male. Approximately 72 percent of the suspects in these family-related violence cases were men, and alcohol was a factor in about 18 percent of these instances.

Family-related violence is not limited to physical harm and homicides but also includes blackmail, threats, and stalking. This type of violence has been documented in around 2,400 cases last year. It is concerning that such acts continue to occur despite increased awareness and prevention efforts.

The prevalence of domestic violence and family-related violence in Saxony-Anhalt highlights the urgent need for increased awareness, prevention, and support services to address this troubling trend. It is crucial that we work together to create a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved.
